In today’s world, the only way we currently have to treat glaucoma is to lower you eye’s internal pressure. Fortunately this can be done in most case with daily drop medication(s) and/or laser treatment. Initially, we typically aim to lower the eyes’ pressure 20-50% depending on how advanced or at risk the patients eyes are.
Surgery is usually reserved for advanced cases or those who cannot have a controlled pressure with eye drops or laser. Currently research is being done in the field of neuroprotection with oral medications.
